Mid-Range Glazes + Bonus: Post Firing Reduction | John Britt
SUMMER CAMP
This is a 3-Day workshop to kick-off Summer Camp with the legendary John Britt!
July 24th | 9-4pm
July 25th | 9-4pm
July 26th | 10 - 3pm
Join glaze expert John Britt for an immersive three-day, hands-on workshop exploring the science, structure, and creative possibilities of ceramic glazes.
Based in the mountains of Bakersville, North Carolina, John Britt has been a studio potter and educator for nearly four decades. Nationally and internationally recognized as one of the leading authorities on glaze chemistry, he travels the world teaching glaze formulation workshops to potters at every level. He is the author of multiple best-selling glaze books, including The Complete Guide to Mid-Range Glazes: Glazing and Firing at Cone 4–7, widely considered essential reading for serious ceramic artists.
This workshop goes beyond the book.
What Participants Will Learn
Over three days, participants will create and analyze a systematic color blend using multiple glaze bases to illustrate the effects of oxides and their influence on color response. Through careful testing and observation, the class will examine how variations in base chemistry impact surface quality, color development, and glaze behavior.
After mixing, dipping, and loading test tiles into the kiln, the group will engage in in-depth discussions covering:
The properties and roles of common ceramic oxides
How base glazes influence colorants
Cones, kilns, and firing dynamics
Oxidation vs. reduction principles
Firing cycles and how adjustments affect results
How to diagnose glaze flaws
Methods for adjusting and refining existing glaze recipes
Strategies for developing new glazes with intention
The workshop offers a clear, practical overview of glaze chemistry, with a strong focus on cone 6 mid-range glazes, while also addressing broader principles that apply across temperatures.
Participants will explore foundational glaze families - including celadons, temmokus, ash glazes, and other classic types, breaking down why they work, how they’re constructed chemically, and how to achieve similar results in your own studio.
John’s teaching style combines deep technical knowledge with accessible explanation, helping potters move from following recipes to truly understanding the “why” behind their results. He’s also a very fun-loving guy.
Who Should Attend
This workshop is designed for beginner to intermediate potters who want to:
Gain confidence in glaze chemistry
Understand how to control and adjust their glazes
Move beyond trial-and-error testing
Develop a systematic approach to color and surface
No advanced chemistry background is required — just curiosity and a willingness to test and learn.
What to Bring
For safety and workshop participation, please bring:
An OSHA-approved respirator or N-95 dust mask
A labeled quart-size zip bag for storing your respirator
Supplies for taking notes
An immersion hand blender (one per two students)
A triple beam or digital scale capable of weighing to 0.1 grams
Please test your scale against another accurate scale prior to the workshop, as many inexpensive models are not properly calibrated.
One scale per two participants is required.
This is an opportunity to study glaze chemistry with one of the most respected voices in ceramics — and to leave with not just test tiles, but a deeper understanding of how to make glazes work intentionally and reliably in your own studio.
Bonus Session: Post Firing Reduction
As an added bonus, this workshop will include a focused discussion and demonstration on Post Firing Reduction on the last day. It’s a technique that allows artists to introduce reduction effects in a gas kiln environment after the glaze firing is complete.
John will explain:
The science behind post firing reduction
When and why to use it
How it affects certain oxides and glaze surfaces
Practical studio methods for safely achieving reduction-style results with a gas kiln
This bonus session offers an exciting opportunity for raku kiln users to expand their surface possibilities and explore atmospheric effects in new ways.
**$35 lab fee due at time of event
A light lunch will be provided each day of the workshop
Availibily: 33 guest spots. First come first serve - your spot is reserved once your payment is recieved
Ages: 18+
Additional Camp Information:
BYOB Policy
We can’t provide beer or wine, but you’re welcome to bring your own if you’re 21+ and sip responsibly.
Camp Patches
Each camper will receive a limited-edition patch designed by the featured workshop artist. Each one reflects the spirit of that class, and the techniques explored. Sew them onto your apron, tote, or camp hoodie, and start a collection! I mean… that’s pretty sweet, right?!
Camp Loyalty Perks
• After paying full price for one workshop, you will receive 10% off each additional workshop.
• Attend all workshops and you’ll receive a limited edition 2026 Summer Camp Claypron (complete with logo and room for your patches) plus 20% off overall.
**Please note: John Britt’s workshop is not eligible for discounts.
Closing Ceremony
Saturday August 1st | 5PM Sharp
What’s a week at summer camp without a closing ceremony and ribbon awards? If you attend just one workshop, you are invited to display your favorite pieces from your week at camp to share with everyone, and for the chance to earn a ribbon. Tried something new? Mastered a tricky technique? Created a masterpiece? Survived kiln drama? There’s likely gonna be a ribbon for that. We’ll cheer. We’ll clap. We may ooooh and ahhh….
Patches will be proudly displayed. Stories will be told. This is our moment to celebrate the beautiful community that forms when we gather to create with one another… and play in the mud.
A Quick Camp Policy Note
All workshop sales are final — no refunds or credits. We operate Summer Camp with built-in discounts to make it accessible, and we plan carefully to create something truly special. Our guest artists travel to be here and are paid for sharing their knowledge with our community. Thank you for understanding and supporting that commitment.*This workshop is not eligible for camp discounts.
Get ready to make some new friends, learn some cool stuff, and have a lot of fun being muddy. Clay nerds unite! See you soon.
