Creative Hand-Building + Surface Design with Milissa Beale

Come spend six weeks getting creative with me!
This class is all about slowing down, getting your hands in clay, and exploring just how much you can make without ever sitting down at a pottery wheel. We’ll work with slabs, templates, texture, carving, attachments and surface design to create beautiful, functional pieces meant to actually be used and enjoyed.
And with fall and the holidays around the corner, this is such a fun time to make.
We’ll explore projects like handbuilt butter dishes, casserole and baking dishes, serving pieces, trays, holiday décor and pieces for gathering around the table. I’ll demonstrate different ways of building forms and share plenty of ideas, but I also want you to have the freedom to take those techniques and make something that feels completely your own.
Surface design is a huge part of my own work, so we’ll spend plenty of time there too -thinking about pattern, composition, carving, texture, color and all of those little decisions that can completely transform a piece.
I’ll be making right alongside you throughout the course, working on some of my own handbuilt pieces and sharing the processes, tricks, mistakes and decisions that happen in a real working pottery studio.
What to expect:
3 Weeks of structured building
1 Week - Building your own design
2 Weeks of surface design - although we will focus on design in each class.
You absolutely do not need previous clay experience. If you’ve worked with clay before, there will be plenty of room to push your ideas further. If you’re brand new, I’ll help you every step of the way.
My hope is that by the end of our six weeks, you’ll have a collection of pieces you’re genuinely excited about - and a whole lot more confidence in your ability to take an idea and figure out how to make it from clay.
My goal is to make this a really fun few hours each week to relax, make things, try things, talk, laugh and be creative together.
