Mixed Medium Garden + Plant Totems | Holly Jones
What will make up YOUR totem? This is a wonderful opportunity to bend both clay and metal to create your very own unique little garden totem. Once they are fired these pieces can be displayed and stored outdoors in your gardens, although you may find that you want to showcase them within your house plants for added charm!
Week 1:
We’ll begin our creative journey by starting with metal stakes and some leather-hard clay shapes. Together, we’ll choose our desired pieces and thoughtfully lay out the forms on a table. After that, we’ll shape, add texture, and apply underglaze to our totem pieces in preparation for firing in the kiln. The components, or beads, will vary in size, typically ranging from 1 to 5 inches in width. I will provide a diverse selection of small wheel-thrown and custom-shaped pieces for you to alter and personalize to your heart's content. We should each aim to create 1 to 2 distinct totems that reflect our personal style.
Participants will be painting with underglaze or Stroke & Coat glazes. I will apply a clear glaze for those who opted for underglaze.
Week 2:
In the following session, we will assemble our beautifully fired “beads” by skillfully shaping the metal as a finale, adding wire, and carefully placing our ceramic pieces onto the stakes. Each finished totem will stand tall at approximately 16 inches. Additionally, I’ll have a variety of “balls,” cylinders, and other items available for easy spacers. Feel free to bring your own spacers as well!
Additional Camp Info:
We can not provide beer or wine, but you are welcome to bring your own as long as you consume responsibly.
Class is limited to 18 participants.
This workshop is part of our summer camp series, and you will earn a badge for participating. You are invited to submit your finished piece for display during our closing day raku picnic on July 20th to earn ribbons and/or prizes.
If you participate in more than one event within our summer camp series you will automatically receive a 20% discount on each additional workshops you attend. If you attend ALL workshops you will additionally receive a Claypron with our official Summer Camp Logo, and be able to showcase all your badges in style!
Our closing day raku picnic is open for all campers to attend, reminisce, and enjoy the day. We will also be open to the public, so feel free to bring friends! There will be raku pots to purchase, glaze, and fire up during the event. Your 20% discount for multiple workshop purchases will apply here as well. Those that attend ALL workshops are invited to raku one pot free of charge.
PLEASE NOTE: All workshop sales are final - no refunds or credits. We operate our summer camp with heavy discounts on our end making it more affordable for you. We plan ahead to make summer camp special, and pay our guest artists for being here and sharing their skillset with our community. Thank you for understanding! :)
Get ready to make some new friends, learn some cool stuff, and have a lot of fun being muddy. See you soon!
